In Europe, the Franconian king Charles succeeded in expanding his empire far to the east and spreading the Christian faith there by force. This is not the only reason why Pope Leo III crowns him emperor in Rome. Empress Irene in Constantinople does not like to hear this, because for centuries the imperial dignity has been linked to the metropolis on the Bosporus. In Baghdad, however, the caliph Harun al-Raschid rules. Neither the Franks nor the Byzantines can compete with his empire. Baghdad is a centre of trade, science and culture. Harun has long been at war with Empress Irene. That is why Charles hopes to win the Caliph of Baghdad as an ally and sends an envoy to the far-off Caliph’s kingdom.
